The Pitching Command Show

S1E25 Pitching Command Show : Sean Boyle 11/25/23

The Pitching Command Show with guest Sean Boyle, NY Yankees AAA Pitcher.

Sean Boyle didn’t start playing baseball until his second year of high school, and when he tried out for the team, he was cut. Instead of complaining, he set out to practice every day at the local ball field and practiced his back yard throwing to the early version of the command trakker target. And he played on a local Babe Ruth league team that went undefeated in his season.

After that he tried out for the HS team and made the JV squad. He had a great year and next year he made the varsity squad as one of their top starting pitchers. After high school there were no offers from colleges, but had been a great success in summer ball so when we called the local Juco college coach Eric Brown, he was excited to have you try out for the team. It turns out that was one of the best decisions he made going to Suffolk CC with coach Eric Brown. He’s a Juco hall of fame coach and still a dear family friend to this day. After posting the 8th lowest ERA in the nation and going to the Juco world series, Sean caught the attention of scout Chris Wimmer who brought Sean to the attention of Wes Johnson who was then the pitching coach for Dallas Baptist.

Sean's first year as a junior at DBU was rough, but it strengthened his resolve to get better. And by your senior year Sean was one of the most reliable relievers in coach Dan Heefner’s squad. That caught the attention of NY Yankees scouts Mike Leuzinger and Scott Lovekamp who drafted Sean Boyle in the 25th round in 2016.

The first couple of years with the Yankees they had Sean as a reliever, and he did well. It wasn’t until they hired Desi Drueschel and Same Briend that things began to change. They then realized when Sean was relieving, he was going longer into games than the starters, so they converted Sean back to a starter.

After the covid year, Sean was primed to take off, and he did. In Sean Boyle's first A+ start, he combined to throw the first no hitter the Hudson Valley Renegades had in 20 years. Then after another few good starts, they promoted Sean Boyle straight to AAA, bypassing AA. Sean did so well in a few appearances without giving up a run that they gave Sean his first start in AAA against the Red Sox AAA team the WooSox in which Sean threw a complete game no hitter, the first no hitter in the new WooSox stadium.

A great discussion with Sean Boyle about training and measuring pitching control, command, sequencing and what it takes to pitch at higher levels of baseball.

With everyone throwing hard nowadays, command is now the separator. It’s no longer a choice between being either a power pitcher or a finesse pitcher today. You need to be both, velocity with command. Command is what separates pitchers from the pack today.
